makers mark technique

Lazer and punch seem to be the most common used for marking. If a piece has a hand carved mark, does this hint anything towards age?

Please define what you mean by hand-carved? an engraved mark? or one doen with an electric pencil? or do you mean a hand made maker's mark punch?
