Walker and Hall

Postby John Gill » Sun Sep 16, 2012 4:06 am

Hi, is the George Walker who established Walker and Hall, Sheffield in the mid 1840's related to the Walker family, assay masters and silversmiths of Chester? many thanks.

Hello John,

I can find no evidence to suggest a link between George Walker of Walker & Hall and the Walker family of silversmiths, including George and John Walker who were assay masters, in Chester. As George Walker of W&H originally came from a rather impoverished working class Sheffield family and the Walkers of Chester were from an distinctly affluent background, geography and social class would suggest that the only link is a common name and trade.
