International Silver Boxed 84 Emblem

I ran across some nice pieces today made by International Silver.

They were not marked Sterling, but there was a square with the number 84 inside.

I am assuming this meant 84 silver plate. If it does not, I am going to kick myself.

I would provide pictures, but the pieces are not currently in my possession.

I know that the 84 marking is often for 84 grams of silverplate for a certain number of pieces. I think
it is common on spoons and the like.

I just wanted to know the likelihood of it designating 84 percent content on three medium size
creamers made by the International Silver Company. Please note, all three seem to have
original serial numbers.

If all works out tomorrow, I will try to post pictures.

In response to your general question - "84" as an indicator of plating thickness or of fineness would not be found on American silver. The International Silver Co. creamers you describe are almost certainly heavily plated restaurant/railroad/hotelware, the number in the square would be the year of production, have seen them from the early 1900s into the '80s; the date numbers were also used on hotelware by their Victor Silver Co. division.

Thank you for your helpful response. I do appreciate the information. I was not aware as to the commonality of the mark
and how it was used. I am a newbie and still learning.

Upon further detailed inspection, the creameries were indeed heavily plated. I did find one spot which clearly showed it
was silver-on-copper.
