A silversmith can determine the class of metal?

Do you know if a silversmith can know which is the base metal under silverplating?

Assuming it is not marked with EPNS (Electro Plated Nickle Silver), EPB (Electro Plated Brass) or EPC (Electro Plated Copper), a silversmith might be able to do a scratch test under the base and determine if it is copper/brass, nickle or pot-metal, but it will leave a mark.
