Google having served me poorly, please can anyone steer me to any studies/websites/books that particularly focus on the kind of engine-turned decoration much used on Birmingham smallwares. Technical info. is welcome, but wider design issues is my main interest. Thanks.

Wikipedia has a description of the history and process of engine turned decoration under the title "Guilloche".
As to the specific designs used in Birmingham perhaps the Assay Office or Records Office there has information in the archives?
