JSP Silver Testing Solution Color Chart

Postby richard357fallon » Mon Apr 25, 2011 9:13 pm

I ordered a new bottle of acid for testing silver on eBay manufactured by JSP. It did not come with a color chart like the other brands of acid i have bought in the past. When i check the internet i get many different answers on what colors it should turn... If any one has used this acid before and can help me out please let me know. Thank you - Richard

I would guess that we talk color red. Is that not the case regardless of asid manufacture.

then it works like my testing set. Only mine remains brown when not silver.
In theory you could see that it becomes more red with higher silver contents. In theory but I have not been able to see that. When I tryed 800 silver became more red than sterling.
There are more to it. You add asid and it changed colour. Now the longer the asid is on the item the darker the colour.
So you should also controle time - how many seconds since added the asid?
The light will also effect.

And when you test plate - the surface is fine silver - so remember to scratch under the plated surface.

In case anyone have experience with testing grade of silver please let us now.

I prefer 18K gold acid for testing silver. You rub a small streak of the silver on the testing stone and drop the acid on the streak. It will disappear then reappear as white bits if silver. It seems to turn faster the higher the content. I always use a control piece of known 925. Some silvertone metals will be a bit confusing, they don't disappear then reappear, they stay the same color throughout.
