Patent Search

Postby Granmaa » Thu Mar 17, 2011 11:00 am

I'm having trouble finding a patent on a silvers ladle.
There is no number, but the information given is "MARRIOT registered Oct 23rd 1856"
Is this enough to go on?

Assuming that your ladle is British, I have to tell that the online data base is unexpectedly down right now. As far as enough information goes, I can't say for sure. I'm pretty hit and miss with the Intellectual Database Online Service.

From the Mechanics' magazine and journal of science, arts, and manufactures, Volume 65, London 1856 By Sholto Percy page 525 which was found online, No. in the register 3894 A J Marriott Oxford Street Ladle pickle-fork. The registration number 3894 alone might be all that is needed to do a patent search, and the other information may be useful too.

Thanks silverly.
The ladle is London hallmarked.

I can't tell you how much time I've wasted searching for patents over the years. Am I right in saying that this magazine doesn't list patents but something similar: "articles of utility"? Is this why I'm having no luck with patent searches?

The registration number for this patent did not come back with anything from the online data base, but it did say there may be something on paper.

The more I look at the IPO site the more I have to say I'm useless with it, so hopefully, there's somebody else that can help you out with this little project.

Without really studying the magazine, I have to agree with your assessment that the magazine leaned towards aspects of articles of utility, but because the magazine's title included the arts, it seems that there would at least at times be a place for many different kinds of articles. At any rate, it is true the magazine doesn't give the overview and drawings that go along with patents, instead it has something like a synopsis of a patent.

Hopefully, his is at least slightly helpful, and good luck with your research.
