Newcastle date letters

Postby farmman10 » Fri Dec 31, 2010 10:27 am

I have been collecting silver for many years and am now investigating it in some detail.
I have always used Bradburys and the English Silver Hallmarks guide published by Foulsham.
When I look at this website's date letters for Newcastle they do not match with the above.
For example, I have piece of Newcastle silver clearly marked with a "U" shield and is clearly 1786 according to Bradburys. But the online encyclopedia date mark is S and none seem to correspond with Bradburys.
Can anyone enlighten me?

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

Do you know, that Newcastle chart has been there for about five years and I never once noticed that it was wrong! Amazing!

Many thanks for bringing it to our attention. I don't know the original source of that image, but as you can see it is pretty ancient and it will be corrected as soon as.

Thanks again for letting us know. I hope you will be letting us see some of your Newcastle collection on the forum.

Regards (red faced) Trev.
