Odiot maker's mark

Postby blackstar » Sun Dec 19, 2010 4:11 pm

I am familiar with the classic Odiot hallmark with the oil lamp with an " O" above used during the 1800s and later. I also saw where Jean-Baptist Claude Odiot also had a hallmark registered with the initials JBCO surrounding a bellows. I have not seen this maker's mark used with the " ODIOT. - A. PARIS. " stamp commonly used on their items. I see that this maker's mark was used until 1826 around the time that Jean-Baptiste Claude Odiot retired and Charles-Nicholas Odiot took over the company.

Did Charles Nicholas Odiot introduce the classic oil lamp " O " Hallmark and incorporate the " A PARIS " and serial numbers ? Did Charles Nicholas & Jean-Baptiste Gustave use an individual marker's mark ?

Also what hallmarks did the previous members of Odiot family use prior, Jean-Baptiste Gaspard Odiot in particular before lozenges became the standard.

Thank you

Welcome to the forum.

I can't answer all of your questions, but here's some background on Odiot marks.

Jean-Baptiste-Claude Odiot registered his mark in 1797, struck off in 1809.
Son, same name, registered in 1801, struck off in 1826.

Charles-Nicholas Odiot did introduce the lamp and O mark in 1826.
Gustave Odiot registered in 1865. Stuck off in 1894.

Between 1894 and 1906 the company used the "PR Cie" with a lamp mark. This mark was for
the company formed by Gustave Odiot, Emile Provost and Paul Edouard Recipon.

From 1906 until 1956 the mark "O Bs" with a lamp was used for Boulenger & Cie.
Since 1956 the classic "O and lamp" mark has been used.

Thank you very much Pat.

For such a storied franchise, I was surprise by the very little information about the different maker's mark used by some of their famed family members over the years.

As for the earlier pre-Revolutionary Odiots, whose marks were all with the traditional crowned fleur-de-lis and two grains of remedy:

Jean-Baptiste Gaspard Odiot (Master 1720, died 1767): JBO, device - a cross
Jean-Claude Odiot (Master 1754, died 1788): JCO, device - none
Jean-Baptiste-Claude Odiot (Master 1785, died 1850): JBCO, device - a helmet
