the "sterling" mark on indian silver

Postby chelchelseas » Mon Mar 15, 2010 2:13 pm

When did Indian silver makers begin stamping their wares "sterling"? I have some objects that claim to be late 19th c. and are stamped sterling, but cannot find any info. about when that stamp was first implemented!
Any info most appreciated!

I have seen the word "Sterling" stamped from 1920 onwards generally in pieces of Indian Silver that I have observed usually on British export items (or for British Colonials living there).
Hope this helps
