language of engravings

Post by bread_baby »

This is a Dutch silver wax seal/stamp made in Amsterdam 18th century. I have trouble finding what language the inscriptions are. Looks a bit like Hebrew but doesn't fit modern alphabet.

Any help would be much appreciated,

bread.

Looks very much like Hebrew to me but you have to take account that the letters in the stamp are mirrored so that in the actual wax seal they would be correct. Unfortunately I can't read Hebrew but I could recognize several letters when quickly comparing them to the letter chart found in the Wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hebrew_alphabet

Oh right it should be mirrored! I have mirrored it and also rotated the lines of text. Hope someone can read hebrew. Thank you.

You might try this until someone who can read Hebrew shows up: https://www.lexilogos.com/english/hebrew_dictionary.htm
Apparently "תאיר" means "light up" or "shine the light" and the letters above the lion could be "זל" which would be Szell (a name). But as my knowledge of Hebrew is pretty much nonexistent I'm not sure about those lines and the rest of the text.

The Lion of Judah (Hebrew: אריה יהודה Aryeh Yehudah) is a Jewish national and cultural symbol, traditionally regarded as the symbol of the Israelite tribe of Judah. According to the Torah, the tribe consists of the descendants of Judah, the fourth son of Jacob. The association between Judah and the lion can first be found in the blessing given by Jacob to his son Judah in the Book of Genesis.
