Crest on a large dish

Post by Kirils »

Hello. Have this large silver dish probably for seafood, fish. Any ideas who might it have belonged to?

It's impossible to say for sure because we don't know the colours of the coat of arms. As the dish is German the family could be German too and the helmet shows that it's part of the nobility but in this case just untitled nobility. I browsed Siebmachers Wappenbuch from 1605 and found three possible families (listed below). And if the family is not from Germany or ennobled after 1605 there can be even more possibilities. The direction of the wings or minor details don't matter in heraldry so the only thing which could determine the family in question would be colours. Unfortunately there isn't any hatching [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hatching_(heraldry)] in the engraving so it's impossibe to see the colours. Here are the three families I found and their coats of arms -(there are several coats of arms in the pictures but just find the correct name):

von Kay https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Sieb ... her069.jpg
die Lantzen von Liebenfels: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Sieb ... her119.jpg
von Bodenschwech: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Sieb ... her141.jpg

Unless you have any information about the provenance of the dish or there aren't any initials in it I'm afraid you can't get much more information.

Sasropakis thank you a lot for such a big research. Unfortunately, there is no more information about this dish.
