Duel Crest on Spoon

Post by dognose »

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can please identify the crests on this Mappin & Co. plated spoon:

Image

On the left is a pair of cuffed clasped hands grasping an olive branch, and on the right a crescent below a sun in splendour. The crests perhaps denote a marriage?

Any thoughts appreciated.

Only more questions...the crests look stamped? Did Mappin keep a warehouse of stamps or must this be custom made? If custom($$$$ or pounds), why on silver-plate unless commercial or someone who could easily afford to fully equip a one-shot service for a wedding banquet of about 300+?
How many British families does that leave?

There is currently a listing for a Gorham flatware item bearing a stamped topmark of Stag Head over Torse standing plain. Only because they added the user's name on the reverse can the seller identify the origin as an early 1900's Minneapolis establishment. Obviously, what may appear to be personalization for individuals or families might in fact be customization for commercial clients. One must wonder how many such objects were made without any additional backstamps to identify the user.
