Fairbairn lists about 50 families using this crest so I'm afraid doesn't help much in identifying the original owner of this piece.

Quite true, it is a very common crest to a coat of arms. It would be blazoned as a unicorn's head erased. Sometimes extra details are thrown in, such as armed (has its horn) and crined (has its mane) especially if there are colours (eg golden horn, red mane) or other fine points that should be noted.
