Mysterious Mark on Stockholm Knife

Hi,

Another Swedish piece with a strange mark:

Image

A dessert knife, 8 1/4" (21cm) in length, with a King's pattern handle.

Image

As can be seen, it bears Stockholm marks for 1842. The mystery mark is overstamping the maker's mark, part of which can be seen at the top.

Is there enough of the maker's mark visable to make an identification?

Does anyone recognise the mystery mark? Perhaps an official Government department. With such a large mark, a huge amount of force would have to be applied to make such a perfect impression, most likely with the use of a fly-press.

Any help appreciated.

Trev.

being from denmark I cannot recognize the goverment arms. but maker I can Gustaf Möllenborg 1823-1850 (1932) Famous swedish silver smith and company continued for a long period.
The M4 mark (2147) is also a perfect match of yours. His M4 mark has no 2147

Some of swedish participants can surely find coat of arms.

Hi Hose,

Many thanks for this information, it is very helpful.

Gustaf Möllenborg is new to me, you say he was famous, was this for the quality of his work, or did he perhaps make something of particular note?

well famous might be the wrong word. But I see his name often, the company had a long period of work
He was born in 18/4 1796 in Dädesjö. working 7/5 1810 at the silversmith J. Flügare in Väksjö then he works at a number of places and in 1823 to 1850 he works and then company is carried on in a new company. He dies 1851 on April 13.
The many years of existence means that I often see work at auktions and there is a long list of his work at various places museums churches etc.

Gustav Möllenborg is "famous" in that sense that hes workshop produced quite a lot of high quality objects. They can be seen in many museums in Sweden, Hallwylska museet, Nordiska museet, Stockhom city museum etc. The company existed to 1932 after which the whole workshop was donated to Nordiska muset who made a museum out of it. The workshop as it was when working tools included can still today be seen in Skansen's goldsmith museum area in Stockholm. An interesting place absolutely worth a visit for interested people. Try it next time you are in Stockholm.
