Capped Head and Double Headed Eagle

Postby Granmaa » Sat Aug 07, 2010 1:38 pm

Could someone help me identify the owners of these crest found on a candlestick which can be seen here: viewtopic.php?f=36&t=21154. The eagle is probably contemporary and the head later.
The double headed eagle could be for Owen, seen on p.67 ofThe Heraldry of Crests.

Out of a ducal coronet a Saracen's head, bearded, wreathed around the temples with a cap fretty, turned up ermine, tasselled Or. The capped head appears to be for DARRELL of Calehill. Sometimes the cap is long and sometimes it appears short, as here. A better picture is on the sussexfamilies.com website. I agree the double headed eagle crest probably came before the Saracen's head crest. There are too many of those (eagle heads) to narrow it down. Kind regards
