Hi
Who recognize this crest? I have checked Ewen’s Heraldry but could not find a match.

Hi Peter,

I've had no luck in finding your crest, but in the back of my mind I'm sure I've seen it before and linking to a college or university.

Just for the future, here's another great resource:

Looks like a ram to me, but perhaps:
Bayley-Worthington of co. Chester - Crest–A goat pass. ar. semee of estoiles sa. in the mouth a sprig of laurel.

listed under WORTHINGTON in

Ram yes, but is that not a crucifix in his mouth?

nope, don't think so, appears to be berries or some other vegetation, same as he's trodding upon.

Unknown family crest

Postby oel » Fri Feb 12, 2010 5:08 pm

Dear all

Thank you for the overwhelming response. As far as I can tell we are looking at a sheep or ram, with a trefoil under one hoof, and another held in its mouth. I appreciate your feedback.

Regards

two possibles:
Levy (England; granted to Joseph Moses Levy of London, and borne by his son Edward Levy Lawson of Hall Barn, Bucks, D.L., lord of the manor of Beaconsfield, who assumed by royal license, Dec. 11, 1875, the surname of Lawson): Arms: Gules, a saltier parted and fretté or, between two rams' heads couped, fesswise, argent. Crest: A ram argent, holding in the mouth a trefoil, slipped vert, and resting the dexter foreleg on a quatrefoil. Motto: Of old I hold! [Burke's "General Armory," Supplement.]
So close, unfortunately that is a cinquefoil under the hoof

Baillie-Gage - a ram
passant argent, armed and hoofed or, holding in the
mouth a trefoil slipped vert (Gage)

Hello Trev & Tom

Thanks for the useful information. For whatever it may be worth. I can add the set has been bought in the U.S.A / California. As I understand, give or take a foil, it could be for Levy or for Baillie-Gage. I like it

I think perhaps we should consider that perhaps this is not a crest, or one very much influenced by Christian belief. It's certainly a form of the Agnus Dei - the Lamb of God. I've not seen it in the guise of a horned ram before but the cross in the mouth is very characteristic.
What date is the vessel and what marks ?

Hi Buckler,

Thanks for your information, although I do believe the ram carries some kind of berries / trefoil in its mouth.
Herewith a photo of the silver plated tea service and marks. The bottom of the foot bears a four part 'hallmark' following the Collis mark, which is a shield with a crown above "C & Co". This particular version of the Collis mark has been used prior to 1870. The mark to its right consist of gothic letters most likely to be EPGS German silver electroplated with silver."A1" often found on fine silver-plate.

It certainly does appear to be crest for the Lawson baronets, according to Fairbairns. The Gage family does not have anything under hoof. It cannot be for Agnus Dei because agnus is a lamb, and this is a ram, aries. Engravers are not as exacting as heraldists. Cheers.

Hello Nobilityhouse

Thanks for the additional information, much appreciated and perhaps you could give some other open topics about unknown family crests a look!
