1805 London Spoon - Bird Feeding Nestlings

I have too many examples of crests to post here, so I will only post the most interesting or the ones that seem to be most easily identifiable. I would also be interested to know of any books which are useful in crest identification. There is of course Fairbairn's, but I have not been able to identify a single crest with it.

This crest is from an 1805 spoon.

Hi Miles,

I believe that crest is representing the 'Pelican in her piety', legend has it that the pelican when short of food will stab herself and feed her young on her own blood.

Lumley (the chicks are still there), but curiously had the chicks not been present the the crest would have been that of Gyles. Why she should be stabbing herself when there are no chicks to feed is a mystery to me, I suspect there is some hidden meaning there.

Found this:

Vulning - Wounding; in the act of wounding. This term is applied more particularly to the pelican, which, when shown in profile, is generally represented as wounding her breast.
