The Lost Marks Project

Post by buckler »

Grimwade's masterly work on London Makers 1697 - 1837 has three major omissions :-
(a) Marks in the two Lost Registers of 1739 - 1758 (smallworkers) and 1758 -1773 (largeworkers) . Grimwade provided from other evidence many of the Largeworkers marks but little on the Smallworkers
(b) Many of the minor small workers marks are not illustrated and can cause considerable doubt and confusion.
(c) Many smiths with an existing mark did not register new, and sometimes totally different punches. A larger number than is realised just did not bother.

Many people and groups have worked on various aspects of this problem, mostly uncordinated and without widespread release of their discoveries.

This is an attempt to assess and collate information from everybody for the benefit of all.

To be included a mark should : -
(1) Not be illustrated in Grimwade, (unregistered section excepted ! ). Anyone posting must have access to Grimwade. A reasonable effort should also be made to ensure it is not provincial !
(2) Have an assay mark of the Lion Passant on the piece containing it , or some good evidence that the silver is English and probably London.
(3) The mark must be clear enough, both on the piece and the photo , to be readily recognised as distinctive. For example many GB marks are so difficult to tell apart that trying to differentiate is impossible in many cases !
(4) A photo of all assay marks should also be posted if possible . This is vital dating evidence
(5) If the date of the item marked is at all uncertain, either stylistically or by absence of date letter, a photo of the object can be posted.
(6) All suggestions, even if very tentative , should include references if possible.

It would be much appreciated if anyone who has seen identical marks to any of the ones given on this forum to post a photo or at least report the object and period. Any information helps.
Thanks

Google have put on line on Google Play Books several Poll Books . One of these
Poll of City & Liberty of Westminster taken at Covent Garden 22 November to 8 December 1749
see https://play.google.com/store/books/det ... UFRQUFKIl0

may provide possible clues to some of the Silversmiths and Goldsmiths who could have had marks in the Lost Small Workers Register .

The attached list has the initials, (and thus possible makers marks ) of all those with Goldsmith, Silversmith, and some Associated Trades given as occupation.
Jewellers have been listed separately
Those Voters names which can be identified as being already in Grimwade, thirty of them, have been excluded - a task made difficult by the somewhat arbitary spelling in the printed Poll Book. Paul DELAMERRY is easy to identify as Paul De Lamerie , whereas Thomas COMBS takes bit of memory to place as Thomas Tombs. Doubtless I have missed several, and mis-copied others . E & OE !

Also it is unlikely that very many of these did have markers marks - the City of Westminster is likely to have had more retailers than working goldsmiths.
The original transcription was made onto a WORD table for analysis purposes, hence the absence of commas. Anyone wanting the full document should contact me via 925 messages and I can provide it, together with some crude statistical data on EXEL
