Silver sporran cantle

Postby 12cmgc » Sun Nov 21, 2021 11:39 am

Hi,

I am looking at the attached hallmarks on the cantle of a white original horsehair - 2 black tails sporran. They are about as clear as I can get them.

Looks like Glasgow but not sure of date stamp and maker maybe Peter Henderson. Ant assistance much appreciated.

It's definitely a Glasgow hallmark but your picture is far too blurred to make out any details. Please try again with your picture. It is most important to get the marks in focus; try waiting until you can take the picture in daylight and don't try to get too close - a smaller in-focus picture is much better than a large close-up blur!

Saw the hallmarks up close, it is P.H Peter Henderson, Glasgow. The date stamp is not much clearer than previous photo.

I would say C with the small flourishes in it for 1899.

Clearer picture confirms C date stamp as 1899.

Thanks for the assistance!

That's actually "O" for 1911.

Here's my reference. O is distinct, but you can see why I thought C.

I can indeed see why you thought it was a C. It just goes to show that references cannot always be relied on. I have illustrated that cycle at https://www.silvermakersmarks.co.uk/Dat ... -1922.html
