Hi members
I would be interested in your thoughts on this George 111 duty mark is it right?, my feeling is that ,there is something not right about it.

I may be wrong. I have left the makers mark out on purpose.

Is it unusual that only the lid of the box is marked and no marks on base.

Regards Guido.

The duty mark looks OK to me. Here is my exemplar of an 1809 mark:

Can I just say that it would easier to make a judgement from a "normal" picture rather than from a microscope camera picture.

However it is unusual to have marks on the lid of a box and not on the base.

Hi,
Is it a hinged box ? If not, can you tell for sure the lid actually belongs to the box (perfect fit and the same, matching decoration)?

Hello Phil and AG.

Thanks for your comments, I do not have the box ,I have purchased it ,it is coming from England.
the images are from the internet.

I have been told the marks are %100 correct. I felt the duty head mark could have been sharper.
I have decided to post the box with all the marks, not sure why marks not on base?
The maker Joseph Ash 1.

interested in comments.

Hi,
Most likely because of basket weave pattern, marks are on the lid; there are identical examples (London 1803 bellow).
I think high relief is probably not very suitable for punching marks (flat counter surface is needed).
In a word, I think everything is OK with your box.Enjoy it !

Hello AG
Many thanks for your comments ,makes sense to have flat base ,when punching marks(always reason ,why things are done or not done, just have to be worked out)
I was under bidder at auction (problem with internet connection) a silver dealer friend tracked the buyer, and I have been able to get it.
Strange situation. (unfortunate price increase )

Have also discovered a similar box (may be better condition) in The lion collection of British silver boxes.Same maker.

found this out after purchase. I feel an interesting box.

Again many thanks great work as always.

regards Guido.
