Marrow scoop

Postby alpha0137 » Mon Sep 06, 2010 5:36 pm

Can anyone help me to identify the hallmarks and date of manufacture of the silver marrow scoop shown below? The maker is either "SM" or, more likely, "WS". Two of the hallmarks are entirely abraded and one is partially abraded. I am enclosing photo herewith.

Welcome to the Forum.

The third mark from the left looks like the London date letter for 1712-13.

A possible maker is Joseph Smith I who registered an SM mark with similar features to this at Goldsmiths Hall in 1707 as shown in Grimwade's book on London Goldsmiths at item 2585.

Many thanks! I think you are correct about the London date mark (1712-13). As to the maker, I will look further, but, again, your guess is a good one...
