I need help in dating a silver napkin ring

Postby davidtheeighth » Mon Sep 07, 2009 9:36 am

I need your help as I'm having great difficulty in dating a silver napkin ring. The napkin ring bears the maker’s mark (see photos): -
<R.BS> into a rectangle. This means that the napkin ring was made by Rolason Brothers, Vyse St. Birmingham.
The napkin ring is clearly hallmarked for Chester
<lion> <shield>
But I am totally confused by the Chester date letter (see photos). This shows a
<date letter into a rectangle with squared off corners>
Initially, I thought the intricate date letter could be one of the Chester date letters within the date range 1839 to 1863 (a ‘D’ or ‘H’ or ‘Q’ or ‘U’ maybe). But this didn’t make sense for two reasons: -
(1) this date range would require there to be an extra Chester mark of a bust head immediately after the shield. As my napkin ring doesn’t have this extra mark, it pointed to the date being from 1890 onwards.
(2) the makers, Rolason Brothers (see above), were only making silver items between 1891 and 1926.
So I then checked out the Chester date letters from 1890 onwards. But all the date letters from 1901 onwards are in rectangles with a squiggle/bracket shaped base, and the date letter on my napkin ring is inside a normally shaped rectangular mark without the ‘squiggle/bracket’ on the base. So this left me with the eleven dates from 1890 to 1900. But none of these date letters seem to match the date letter on my napkin ring.

It looks to be the 'D' for 1904 rotated 90 degrees counterclockwise.

Dear salmoned
Many thanks for your reply to my query. It was clever of you to try rotating the date mark. The 1904 date you have come up with matches the period Rolason was making silver items, so I will go along with your conclusion. Thanks again.
Kindest regards

Hello David,
For further confirmation of Salmoned's identification a check of 7 items with a Chester date letter in the 1901-26 series shows every one to have what appears to be a straight base to the mark and two turned 90 degrees.
Your ID of the makers is correct. Although Birmingham based they also registered this mark with the Chester Assay Office in 1901.

Dear MCB
Thank you for helping to confirm the Chester date letter of 1904. I'm pleased that my item query has managed to increase our knowledge of Chester date marks: i.e. (1) that Chester date letters can sometimes be turned 90 degrees; and (2) that Chester date letters in the 1901-1926 series can also have a straight base.
Kindest regards
David
