Please assist with marks on english salver

Postby Carrieack » Fri Feb 06, 2009 5:31 pm

The marks are somewhat rubbed off so I am unsure of maker and date. Can an expert please assist? Thanks so much

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

Looks like Richard Bayley (Grimwade 2279) London 1743.

Can someone else confirm?

Trev.

I have slight reservations on both the makers mark and the Lion Passant Guardant. I could be being overcautious but both punches look slightly wrong for Richard Bayley and a London 1740-1756 assay mark.
I initially though perhaps Newcastle but cannot force the makers mark into any of the known marks so have discounted that .

Hello,
Although the outline of the lion mark seems, as Buckler observes, somewhat at odds with the one normally accepted as right for London 1743 I'd agree with Trev, on the balance of probability, the piece could be attributed to Richard Bayley.
For what its worth I don't know of another "RB" mark which would fit, the town mark and date letter styles look OK and Grimwade has it that Bayley was a well known pot and jug maker of the time.
