Old colonial chocolate pot?

Postby fatso » Fri Mar 14, 2008 8:59 pm

I wonder if anyone of you, experts, can recall the shape and provenance
of this small charming choc pot as presented in my photos:

It does test as coin silver, has that lovely but fairly primitive feel to it, nice heat protection plated over the handle. Unfortunately, no hallmarks except the numbers as pictured plus 5946 elsewhere. Could it be that those Founding Fathers, Washington, Adams, Jefferson were served hot chocolate from my pot?

Hello All-

I look forward to finding out about the provenance of this item as well, but my question is why is it not marked by a makers or assay mark? Nice looking chocolate pot by the way.

Best wishes- Byron

Sorry, slowly learning the ropes(re: image too large)
Wating for the magician, still, who might confirm that my choc pot
has graced the lips of Adams, Jefferson et consortes.
In the meantime, wish to report that the acid test came good in the past.
More to the point, having learned from this forum the trick of using
old Archimedes law to my advantage, I can confirm that my choc pot
is made of high quality silver. Coin grade at least.

To my eye there is no chance it is American and little possibility of it being European, strikes me as being from somewhere further to the east.

Thank you. The proverbial devil is buried in the detail.
England, where it was obtained, is a treasure trove, still.
Full of those amazing finds from half of the world.
I wouldn't be surprised at all if somebody were to claim
my choc pot as Surinamese, Java or some such exotic
places. Just go to the Portobello market in London and
you will see it all.
