birmingham maker

Postby sash58 » Tue Feb 05, 2008 4:32 pm

Hi, I'm another newbie with a question. I have a silver christening mug and know that it was made in birmingham in 1911. However, I'm a bit perplexed regards the makers mark which are the initials JW. The initials are raised within a figure 8 mark. I had thought it might be Joseph Wilmore but read recently that he died well before this date. Could the maker then be John Woodward ( a partner of Wilmore) or someone else. Any ideas? Thank you

Hi Sash-

Maybe J. Wilmot JW in a figure 8 1888 to 1911 shown here:

Let us know if it matches...

Thanks so much for that. Yes it is the right mark so now I know who made the mug.

Sorry, I've tried but I don't think my camera is anywhere near good enough to obtain a reasonably clear picture.

However, as a description I can tell you that the marks are:

Maker - JW as shown on the list you provided
Assay - Anchor mark for Birmingham
Silver - Lion mark
date - m identified as 1911

Hope this helps. If I can at some stage get a decent picture then I will post it on here.

Thanks for all your help

Sash
