Anyone know this maker.

Postby paulh » Wed Jun 06, 2007 1:21 pm

Can anyone identify this maker. The spoon is one from a set of engraved fiddle tea spoons, possibly by a Channel Islands silversmith. This idea comes from the fact that the engraving is typical of the style to be found in Jersey and also they came along with several other similar spoons by J.P.Genge of Jersey with bear the same monogram as the spoon pictured.

Thanks in advance.

Replying to my own posting here, but I forgot to say that the maker's mark is a overstamp.

Perhaps Charles T. Maine of Jersey, jeweler known for overstriking on London pieces, started in 1890, believe the business may still be in operation.

Thanks to you both. Nice to have my suspicions confirmed.

The business was still in operation until a few months ago. What is nice to see on the Jersey High street is that the facade of the shop is still original from when it originally opened:

Hi Simon,

Thanks for posting these details. Sad to see the demise of yet another famous old name.
