I hope I don't sound argumentative, but my opinion is they are the same mark. Of course you have an advantage as you can compare you mark in hand to their mark. But theirs was obviously poorly struck, the damaged later, all the spaces are the same, and a few points like the sharp end of the C. etc. are the same. When a mark is poorly struck, I concentrate on the similarities not the differences which can be caused by the strike.
I presumed the pseudo mark was the Prince of Wales feathers, or at least their idea of them.
