Hi - have recently acquired two Cape table spoons with marks for Johannes Casparus Lotter. For once the spoons are in good condition - as are the marks.
But are they Lotter senior or Junior.
Weltz attributes this exact JCL mark (no76) to Lotter senior - but without the two stars. A slightly different ICL mark (no78) with the two stars is attributed to Lotter junior. The spoons would to be C1800 to me. Maybe 1790s.
Weltz gives ICL senior born 1737, working 1766-?. ICL Junior born 1768, working 1811 until his death in 1823. Judging by the late start to Lotter Junior's professional career I can only assume this was one seamless father son operation and the punches may have been pretty interchangeable, Junior only being attributed with the business on his father's death.

Any thoughts appreciated - Regards Frank
