Australian Silversmith - SCHÄFER (undocumented)

Postby bstaunto » Thu Nov 01, 2012 3:15 am

Hi again,

Here is another rare Australian silversmith. There is some disagreement on whether this is Edward Schäfer or Charles Schäfer, both of Melbourne. This mark is not found in any of the Australian Silver reference books.

This piece is one of only a few known (the rest being serviette rings). Anyone else got a piece???

Love to discover some more,

Ben

Hi Ben,

I'm sure you are aware, but for the benefit of others, some information on Charles Schafer can be found here:

viewtopic.php?f=38&t=18484&start=175

As far as Edward is concerned, Kurt Albrecht recorded him as being located at 118, Swanston Street in 1863-4, 3, Herald's Passage, Bourke Street East in 1868-70, 114, Swanston Street, 1871-88, and 242, Swanston Street in 1889-95.

John Hawkins also makes mention of C. Schafer, 33, Peel Street, Windsor, Melbourne, exhibiting a silver fern tree flower stand and silver ornaments at the Melbourne Exhibition of 1880.

Sands & McDougall's Directory of Prahran, Windsor, South Yarra and Toorak - 1885-6, records a Charles Schafer located at 1, Alpha Street, Windsor.

Edward Schafer is recorded as a Working Jeweller in the Melbourne Commercial Directory 1862, located at 43, Little Collins Street East.
