JL - John Leslie Perhaps?

Postby dognose » Wed Nov 16, 2011 8:11 am

Hi,

Here's a set of six feather edged teaspoons, the maker of which I am uncertain about.

John Leslie of Aberdeen is a possible candidate, although he was most often known to have used an 'IL' mark, rather than a 'JL', Richard Turner does attribute, in his 'A Directory of Scottish Provincial Silversmiths and Their Marks' a 'JL' mark to Leslie.

In the past I have noted the use of feather edging on some of John Leslie's products.

Any other thoughts on who the maker may be?

I would go with John Leslie as well. Note also the Scottish style monograms.

Hi Miles,

Thanks for that. They are a nice set, with just a little wear to one of the bowls, and dimpling to another.

I have 4 buckles or pairs of buckles with this mark with it's distinctive vast triangular foot serif to the L.
Two are of a pattern very common to Scots provential buckles, and rarely seen in English silver. Both have no assay marks. A buckle with this mark was sold by Lyon and Turnbull as John Leslie.
One just has the JL mark and is of a pattern not seen in England.
The fourth buckle has the thistle assay Mark and a Duty Mark , and a chape with a Scots emblem .
I am therefore 99% sure this is a Scottish Mark, almost certainly provential.
John Leslie is the most obvious suspect and I personally would be happy to give it an 80% probability.

Hi Clive,

Many thanks for posting this information. The spoons certainly do seem likely to be the work of John Leslie.
