Tongs N S with an Anchor

Postby silverly » Thu Mar 25, 2010 9:29 am

Anybody recognize these marks? Scottish provincial (Greenock) is my uninformed guess. Thank you in advance for any help that might be given.

In the Silver Spoon Club journal, 19/02, December 2008, in the auction section a photograph of an identical pair of tongs with your marks plus a makers mark PN is attributed to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada circa 1855.

'PN' almost certainly would be Peter Nordbeck.

Thank you Paul and Trev. The Nova Scotia attribution was given with these tongs when they were purchased, but I was afraid it had something to do with N S. At the same time, there was something familiar about the mark.

Is there anything beyond the auction claims to connect this mark to Nova Scotia? Thanks again.

Hello.

Here are a couple of sets of marks attributed to Peter Nordbeck.

From 1837 to 1859 he employed a number of skilled workers and training apprentices including Langford, M.S. Brown, Vieth, Witham and others.

Thank you Pat. Very convincing. Sorry for the skepticism Paul. It goes with the territory I think.
