Peter Ross Aberdeen

This sugar sifter which may have been later altered from a toddy ladle was purchased in the Highlands and has only the makers mark PR which was attributed to Peter Ross of Aberdeen. Elvens Heraldry shows similar towers with foliage but nothing identical.

Your thoughts please on any of the above three points?

Hi Paul,

I can't add much, except to say that by a comprasion of the mark, Peter Ross does appear to be the likely maker of this ladle.

Richard Turner's book shows that Ross was a known maker of ladles and notes his working dates as the short period of 1819-1822.

I also looked at Elvens, the crest of 'Hill' is frustratingly close!

Just to add a little more information regarding the working period of Peter Ross:

This notice appeared in the Births, Marriages and Deaths section of The Glasgow Herald, Friday 20th September 1822

"At Aberdeen, on the 16th instant, Lieut. William Anderson, of Woodbine Cottage, Deeside, and late Adjutant 71st Highland Infantry, to Ann Patrick, relict of the deceased Mr. Peter Ross, jeweller, Aberdeen."

I would have thought, bearing in mind the prolonged period of mourning that was usual at this time, that it is likely that Peter Ross died in 1821 rather than 1822.
