Provincial salt spoon,unknown mark?
Provincial salt spoon,unknown mark?
Hi
I have this salt spoon of 10 cm long that I need help with.
I have not come across this mark before.
Well struck mark so hopefully someone can determine the maker.

Re: Provincial salt spoon,unknown mark?
Hi Trev,
My first port of call was the hallmark menu list you refer to.
I cannot see who you may be are referring to in the lists of makers.
I have gone through both the Cork and Limerick marks by Bowen & O'Brien.
I cannot see a mark that is the same or even similar in the outline shape.
Cheers Bob

Re: Provincial salt spoon,unknown mark?
Hi Robert. I assume Trev meant trawl through the marks and see if you can find it. Not all makers marks are illustrated in those books or indeed in that list. I don't see anything remotely like it in Bennett's book either. Personally, I can't even figure out for certain what the letters are or whether the punch is upside down or not in the photo. I suspect it is upside down in which case it could be PC but it's not Patrick Connells's mark. Often, it's easier to see marks with the naked eye than with the camera so can you make out what the initials are?

Re: Provincial salt spoon,unknown mark?
Hi Bob,
No, as Gordon has surmised, I didn't mean to imply that the mark was there for sure. I didn't have the time to search for it, and I wasn't sure that you were aware of those pages.
As with all provincial marks, there are still fresh examples to be found, and more research to be done. Hopefully something will come to light regarding your example.

Re: Provincial salt spoon,unknown mark?
Hi,
with the naked eye and under a glass the mark seems like JS or possibly JF
I have loaded 2 more pics to see if any better for definition.
Also turned 1 pic 180deg just in case we are reading upside down.

Hope this helps

Re: Provincial salt spoon,unknown mark?
Just playing devil's advocate, but could that cartouche shape be the result of an overstamp?

Re: Provincial salt spoon,unknown mark?
Its certainly possible that it is over stamped, any ideas on a maker if you ignore
the bits that look like part of a crown and just study the shape of the lettering?

Re: Provincial salt spoon,unknown mark?
It could be John Sheehan. He has three different marks listed (two in Bennett and another Bowen and Obrien), and your mark looks like it could be a
combination of two. One of the two in Bennett has a crown on top, and the one in Bowen et al looks similar to the curvy script of yours.
Just a thought,
Ben.

Re: Provincial salt spoon,unknown mark?
Hi Ben
Thanks for the input,
perhaps Sheehan was using one of his new stamps over some piece of old stock?
seems a possibility anyway.
Looks like the scroll style mark as you mention but still not 100% certain yet.
