looking for help on a retailers mark

Postby doc » Mon May 28, 2012 5:47 pm

At dognose's prompting, I am posting a question regarding an Irish retailer's mark; the attached photo is from a sterling stuffing spoon from 1834 by Richard Garde that I recently acquired (my first piece of Cork silver!), and it has the retailer's mark R.CAVE. I have seen one other piece online from another maker with this same mark. Any help that could be provided would be most welcome. I have included a photo of the whole spoon in case someone is interested.

Hi Doc,

At last, an answer! The retailer is likely to be Robert Cave, who was recorded as a Silversmith and Jeweller, working in Cork in 1834.

Regards, Trev.
