Marrow Scoop JD

Postby cycling4life » Tue Oct 19, 2010 12:43 pm

Hi all,

I recently bought a marrow scoop from an Irishman who said the below marrow scoop was from Dublin. The mark looks like JD.

I have experience with Irish marks but I have never heard of the 4 stamps being solely the maker's mark - does anyone have any experience with this type of mark?

Many thanks,

Hi Paul.

A belated welcome to the Forum.

The mark looks good to me for John Daly of Dublin. See: http://www.925-1000.com/dlDublin2.html#M

Daly registered with the Dublin company in 1786 and was around until at least 1809, after that he seems to disappear from Dublin directories.

This form of marking is commonly called 'Duty Dodging', a reference to a set of marks that, at first glance may appear to be a set of official hallmarks. It's a term I've never been comfortable with, but I'm very much in the minority with that one!

Trev.

Thanks Trev,

Never heard of "Duty Dodging" before - I wasn't sure if it was just a fake mark.

Many thanks for your help in solving the question.

Kind regards,

Paul
