What is the story here? Never seen Before

Postby dartsil » Mon Aug 29, 2022 3:09 am

Hi all,

I have came across a pair of Irish dessert spoons, hallmarked from Dublin in 1804 by Samuel Neville.

One being struck as you would expect, the other has had the stamping of the hallmarks punched into a rectangular recess, I have never seen this before so wanted to put it out there for everyone's thoughts.

Look forward to hearing what some of you may think.

Regards,
Colin

Hi,
One logical explanation; something had to be obliterated (erased) with a rectangular punch struck deeply over someone`s marks (spoons obtained from another stock for whatever reason) and then full set of marks applied as they should be. But that would mean double taxation, unless something else had to be obliterated (erased). Unusual find for sure.
