A correspondent has sent me the following pictures of a Luckenbooth brooch. The hallmark and maker's mark have been erased by being scratched through but there is enough of the hallmark visible to identify it as Edinburgh, 1971. The lettering on the maker's mark has completely gone but the shape of the punch together with the date and the nature of the brooch has allowed me to identify it as probably John Hart. Interestingly my correspondent has seen another brooch by Hart in an online auction with similar erasures. Our question is: does anybody have an explanation for the erasures?
