Scottish Sterling marks?

Hello there!

I have this glass bottom tankard and my research into it's past has come to a stand still.

I believe this was made by a person in Glasgow, however my recourses keep going round in circles. Especially the serpent head? I cannot see any similar anywhere I have looked.

Any help into the maker, date and if there is proof it is actual silver then I would be most obliged.

Unfortunately due to the image size, I can only post you a link to the hosting. I hope the images are clear, if they are not please do not hesitate to let me know and I shall upload more.

Any help, advice or information would be gratefully received.

Many thanks

Rob

Hi Rob,

They are pewter marks.

Hi Trev

Thank you for the reply.

Is the lion mark not a lion rampant (?) from Glasgow?

Hi Rob,

Pewterers often used marks that mimicked official silver hallmarks. The Lion Passant, Lion Rampant, Lion's Head Erased, Leopard's Head etc. marks are often to be found on pewter wares. Such markings were used by pewterers all over the country and are not an indicator of the town of manufacture.

Many pewterer's marks are identifiable, I checked the very few resources that I have on the subject, but to no avail, but perhaps someone else may recognise the mark, so keep checking back.

Hey Trev

Thank you so much for your help. It makes sense now as to why I could not find any more information on it being a silver maker.
