Help with Maker B&H and design(?) #791141
Hi all, I have received a cutlery set that seems to be Sheffield 1946 but I have been unable to figure out the maker. The hallmarks are all very clear. In addition, each piece is stamped with 925 and Rd 791141. If anyone has any information or can point me toward where to find some I'd really appreciate it. Thank you!

I have seen this manufacturer's mark with Sheffield hallmarks dating from 1938 to 1965 but have been unable to identify it - so far.

Thank you. That squares with the date letter indicating 1946. I’ll just keep hunting then...silvermakersmarks wrote:I have seen this manufacturer's mark with Sheffield hallmarks dating from 1938 to 1965 but have been unable to identify it - so far.

The date letter seems to indicate 1946 but the design number indicates 1934. The national archives are closed for the foreseeable due to the pandemic. Do you have any suggestions where else I can look to understand the difference in dates? Thank you!dognose wrote:Hi,

The design may have been registered in 1934, but items produced in this design may have been produced for many years after.

If it helps, the pattern in called Nevil. According to the Watchmaker, Jewller and Silversmiths "Guide to Flatware" 1955,it was made by several manufacturers. Which doesn't explain the Registration mark.

Which doesn't explain the Registration mark.
It does; as Trev explained it was the year of registration, a successful design was produced even decades afterwards.
