I could not figure out the maker (J.D&S) or date. I would appreciate any help that you could give me.

The maker looks like James Dixon & Sons (see http://www.925-1000.com/dlSheffield2.html#M), but you'll have to post a larger, clearer picture of the hallmark so that we can work out what the date letter is.
