Help identify date mark on JD/WD Sheffield .925 Sauce Boat

Postby GMerry » Wed Jan 22, 2014 12:57 pm

Hi,

First off, thank you for allowing me to use this forum.

I have a JD/WD Sheffield .925 - or at least that's what I can identify so far - but what's the date mark? I can't tell if it's an i, a j or a z, and can't find anything that looks like it in the date letter chart. Are any of you able to help, please? My apologies, I'm not sure why wont load some of my pics the right way round. The hallmark in the first pic is the correct way up.

Thank you.

Hi G,

Welcome to the Forum.

Your sauce boat was made by James Deakin & Sons (John and William Deakin), Sidney Works, Matilda Street, Sheffield. See: http://www.925-1000.com/dlSheffield2.html#M

The date of assay was 1917.

An image of the Sidney Works can be found here: viewtopic.php?f=38&t=19110

Thank you very much for your help, Trev. Typical, the Sheffield date mark chart finishes the year before!

I have another piece which I'll post in the Chester section of the forum. It's an inkwell and from what I can tell it's from 1909. I just can't figure out who made it as the symbol doesn't seem to match any listed on this site. I'll go load some pics now.

Thanks again.

G
