This has been in the family for three generations and I'm trying to learn more about it.

Researched the first of four markings and believe it's made by John Round & Sons. The lid opens and it's velvet lined.. have no idea what it's designed to hold. All information appreciated.

Hi Bratte,
Welcome to the forum.

Yes, made by John Round & Son Ltd, sterling silver, Sheffield date letter, I believe for 1899.
For info see; http://www.925-1000.com/dlSheffield3.html#M
Or for more information about John Round & Son Ltd (Joseph Ridge) see;

Late Victorian regency style silver jewelry box, hence the velvet lining and once perhaps part of a dressing table set.
The numbers are internal reference (code) numbers used by the silver house/smith. If I may say, the box could do with a little LTC in combination with a drop of silver polish.

Oel.
