Help Identifying Hallmark on Flask

Postby bigoneedshelp » Tue Oct 16, 2012 1:51 pm

Hi,

Is this the correct hallmark for G&JWH (G&JW Hawksley)? My research indicates this hallmark is usually a shield shape with the initials "GJWH" in it versus the mark I have on this flask.

I also came up with Sheffield 1898. Can anyone confirm? It says .275 on the the bottom as well if that helps, although I don't know what that means.

Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
G & W H Hawkesley Ltd of 75 Carver Street, Sheffield entered the mark at the Sheffield Assay Office on the same day in 1889 as the one in the shield shape.
As you say the date letter appears to be the lower case f for the assay year 1898-9.
At a guess the .275 mark may have something to do with how much of the warming spirit the flask can contain; a quarter pint perhaps?

Mike
