Hi Martin,
Just a thought, and nothing else. When pieces such as this were sent for assay, only the fork part would have been submitted. This, of course, would have just been struck with the maker's mark. I have seen in the past, the maker's mark applied to knife tangs, penknife blades, etc., where after assembly of the piece, post assay, the maker's mark was completley hidden. Whether this was intentional or not, I do not know, but it is possible that it was so that the customer, if ordering a quantity of such pieces, could add his mark to pieces.
Like I said, it's just a thought, but if no maker is found to match your mark, then it could be a possibity.
