Trying to id maker of fruit fork.

Postby techsol » Thu Sep 08, 2011 10:29 am

Hi, I am trying to identify the maker of this Sheffield hallmarked folding fruit fork. Its quite unusual as it has a full set of hallmarks, most other Georgian folding fruit forks and knives I have owned have only had partial hallmarks.

Thought I would give this another try in case some of our more knowledgeable members missed it 1st time round.

Hi Martin,

Just a thought, and nothing else. When pieces such as this were sent for assay, only the fork part would have been submitted. This, of course, would have just been struck with the maker's mark. I have seen in the past, the maker's mark applied to knife tangs, penknife blades, etc., where after assembly of the piece, post assay, the maker's mark was completley hidden. Whether this was intentional or not, I do not know, but it is possible that it was so that the customer, if ordering a quantity of such pieces, could add his mark to pieces.

Like I said, it's just a thought, but if no maker is found to match your mark, then it could be a possibity.

Regards Trev.
