Makers Mark on 1805 Silver Salts

Postby Beatrice » Thu Mar 31, 2011 2:08 pm

I would be very interested to know more about these silver salts. They are a very unusual design and on first glance look contemporary but the hallmarks tell a different story.

I believe that they are Sheffield and 1805 because of the B with the crown, but not completely sure.

The makers mark seems very poor. I would very much like to know a little bit more about them. They did come with two glass inserts but they do not seem to fit and therefore I think a rather bad later addition.

Any help would be fantastic.

Hi Beatrice,

Welcome to the Forum.

I can't see the maker's mark that clearly, but it may be that of Joseph Tibbitts of Gibraltar Street, Sheffield.

Hello Dognose

Thank you for the welcome. This really is a fantastic forum full of information. The makers mark is very difficult to see I agree, unfortunately, this is the best picture I could get. The marks are very small. I have looked up Joseph Tibbitts and have only been able to find one picture with his markers mark and there does seem to be a similarity. Is there anywhere I can find more about him and his work?

Thank you
Beatrice
