Marks on blade of 1913 fish knife

Postby pippacully » Mon Jun 15, 2009 3:23 pm

Hello all,
I've been enjoying looking at this site for a while and finally have a question of my own.
I have a set of silver fish knives and forks manufactured in Sheffield in 1913 with the makers mark JY which, according to this site, is made my the Yates brothers.
The knive blades also carry several marks and I don't see anything about this kind of marking. I hope someone can explain these to me!
I'm sorry of this is a basic question or a duplicate -- I have searched the forums and not found anything that explains.
I apologize for the quality of the maker mark photo -- I had a difficult time getting the camera to focus on this better.
Thanks

Hi
The marks on the blade are silver plate marks, the silver marks are for the banding between the handles (either bone or ivory) l cannot see the silver hallmarks very well but you appear to be correct with Yates

Sorry for the large pictures. I'm hoping these ones are better.

Hello all,
I had used the British hallmark section to identify these knives and forks as Yates Brothers.
Now I can't find the JY hallmark listed on the Sheffield page. Could it have been removed?
Thanks
Pippa

Here is the Yates Brothers mark that was entered at Sheffield on June 15, 1900.

Not sure what happened with the picture of the mark.
