English Silver Tea Set

Postby DDW » Thu Aug 14, 2008 9:27 am

Hi - From my research I think this is English, date 1864. I am looking for any additional help. Would it be sterling or plate?
Thank you!

Hello DDW,

Welcome to the forum.

The marks (the lion, the crown and the Queen's head) confirm the item pictured was assayed at the Sheffield office 1864-5 and is of sterling quality. Presumably the other pieces are similarly marked?

The mark within the diamond shape is the registered design mark.

The JB/EB mark is for the makers Joseph and Edward Bradbury trading as Thomas Bradbury & Sons from 24 Arundel Street Sheffield.

Thank you!

I did find the registry mark page, which is how I was able to date it. Ididn't know if it was sterling or not. Only the 3 pieces on the tray are marked this way. Would the small pot and the piece without a lid be a creamer and sugar. They are quite large.

Hi,

Yes, I would say milk jug and sugar bowl, sometimes you find another bowl for the tealeaf slops. Is the tray sterling also?

Trev.
