Georgian Cup or Shot Glass Sheffield 1773? Maker RS?

Postby amw » Thu Jul 10, 2008 6:25 pm

I am struggling with the date on this little cup. The marks look like Sheffield Sterling 1773. The date letter is so odd that I cannot find another choice. This little cup (I am calling it a shot cup, like a shot glass - is that proper?) came with the 1733 London Mug queried a day or so ago, so it is possible it is that early.
I'd like to make out the maker, RS in a shield; but I am not finding the right shield shape for Sheffield at that time. The initials are not clear. The little cup is 1 3/4" tall, and .75 troy ounces.
Thanks, Al.

Hi Al,

Hope I do not disappoint you too much, but its 1973. This set of marks was applied to commemorate the bi-centenary of the Sheffield Assay Office.

Regards Trev.

One doesn't expect the 1700s all the time.

That's fine, thanks. One doesn't expect the 1700s all the time; that would be impossible. Now I can match up the maker, so that's good. Thanks!
