Confirm Hallmark 1876 and identify object

Postby Caress » Tue Feb 26, 2008 9:39 am

I am new to this. Please confirm Hallmark _ Birmingham 1876(?) made by AC&Co but this seems to be too early from what I've read so far since they started manufacturing later? The hallmark picture is from inside the lid. On the outside the anchor of Birmingham is embossed.
Please also help me with identifying what this object is? It looks like a teapot or a watering can. Many thanks

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.
It looks like 1895 to me, if it were 1876 it would have a Duty Mark. It is a hot water jug, it's shape is based on what was called a boiler filler, very similar to a watering can but with no rose.
Sorry I cannot help with the maker.

Hi there. The makers mark is A G & Co and it represents Alex Goodman & Co who were registered in Sheffield. The hallmark letter is actually a small gothic letter 'v' which was used in sheffield in 1913-1914. Regards, Nigel

If it is Birmingham then Cohen and Charles is a possibility.

Caress, can you confirm that it is an Anchor?

Thank you kindly for all the contributions. Herewith a close-up of the hallmark on the outside (the other was on inside of the lid), showing the Birmingham mark as well as the date stamp. There is no duty stamp.
